HIGH WHEAT YIELD
118. Bushel Crop At Lagmhor
In February a yield of almost 116 bushels to the acre from a nine-acre crop of Arawa on the property of Mr J. B. Patterson at Brookside was reported in these columns. Now advice has come to hand of another Arawa crop—this time at Lagmhor, in Mid-Canterbury which has. yielded 118 bushels to the acre over a 19-acre paddock. This magnificent crop was on a property farmed this season by Mr D. S. Crosson. From this paddock Mr Crosson took 2243 bushels of wheat with the grain proving an excellent sample and weighing 641 b to the bushel. The paddock, which had been broken up out of perennial ryegrass and white clover down for four years, was drilled with Arawa early last June. No fertiliser was sown with the seed. An excellent strike resulted and with the spring sunshine and the abundant spring and summer rain the crop flourished until it was standing a uniform 4ft in height. A total of 718 sacks of grain were taken off the 19 acres when the crop whs header harvested at the end of January. The crop was sown for seed and the grain will be used for that purpose. According to Mr,Crosson the soil in’the paddock was rich, free and easily worked. This was the first crop of wheat grown by Mr Crosson since he began farming on his own account four years ago. He recently left his Lagmhor property and is now farming in the Lyndhurst area where he intends to grow some wheat.
