A waitress is presumed to have been lost overboard from the Matson liner Mariposa in the Tasman Sea yesterday. She was Miss Rose B. Burke, of Oklahoma, United States. The Mariposa is due in Auckland from Sydney tomorrow. Miss Burke was last seen at 10 ajn. yesterday when the liner was 500 miles out from Sydney The ship swept the area for four hours and could find no trace of the woman. The liner will now berth at Auckland at 10 a.m. tomorrow, two hours late, and will sale for North America at 6 p.m. Child Dies After Eating Pills (New Zealand Press Association) OAMARU, March 14. After eating pills prescribed for another person, a child died in the Oamaru hospital last evening. He was Trevor Allan Graham, aged 2J. The pills were with other parcels in the car in which-Trevor, the son of Mr and Mrs D. Graham, of Herbert, was travelling home He ate the pills at 5 p.m. and although rushed to the hospital died at 8.40 p.m. Yachtsman Drowned (New Zealand Press Association! WAIHI, March 14. When a 14ft X class yacht overturned on the Bowentown bar early this morning a middle-aged man was drowned. He was Edward Kirk, of Te Awamutu. With his wife, Dr. K. N. Hiskins and Mr R. N. Strawbridge, Mr Kirk left Whitianga to sail to Tauranga last night. The yacht got into difficulties on the bar and overturned. The other members of the crew were rescued. Police and yachtsmen are searching for Mr Kirk’s body.
