EXAMINATION OF STATE RENTS
Explanation By Minister
The State had built more than 7000 rental houses in Christchurch, said the Minister of Housing (Mr Fox) when he opened the Parade of Homes at Aranui on Saturday. Some persons said that the rentals were too low; the Government was examining rentals now, said Mr Fox. That would be good news to some and bad news to others.
Some sections of the community were falling behind in housing, said Mr Fox. There were those who were getting on in years, and there were spinsters—“ They like to be known as bachelor women; perhaps that is a good thing.’* One of the Government’s most important proposals had been the 3 per cent. loan. In this it had tried to give expression to what had been determined on in the election campaign: to assist creditworthy citizens who deserved this special assistance. There would be difficulties and not everyone would be satisfied but the Government believed that the advantages of the 3 per cent, loan would reach those who most needed them. They would go to some of the best citizens, said Mr Fox.
