CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Resignations On April 8 April 8 has been chosen as the date on which the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and two councillors, Mr J. Mathison, the Minister of Transport, and Miss M. B. Howard, the Minister of Social Security, will resign from their City Council positions. The date chosen is the last day for the resignations so that the by-elections may be held on May 17, the date of the triennial elections for the Christchurch Transport Board and Drainage Board. It is expected that Cr. G Manning. the present Deputy-Mayor, will be the Labour Party’s candidate for the Mayoral by-election, and Cr. W. P. Glue has been mentioned as a strong possibility for Citizen's Association nomination. If both contest the Mayoral byelection, both parties will have to put forward five candidates, and the City Council will be left five short until after the elections.
