Swimming Sacred Heart College

The annual swimming sports of Sacred Heart College were held recently. The senior championship was won by Joan Martin (15 points) and equal runners-up were Rosalie O’Connell. Anne McVeigh and Norma Fahey (8). The intermediate champion was Irene Dolan (19), with Rosalie McHugh (11) runner-up. The junior championship was won by Colleen Manifold (21) and equal runners-uo were J. Kearns, J. Shannahan, and Mary O’Brien (8). The primary champion was Helen Gibson, and the runner-up Elizabeth Ashworth.

The inter-house relay was won by St. Anne’s Blue House with St. Cecelia’s Red House second. The inter-form relay was won by Form V with Form 111 second. Villa Maria College A demonstration of the methods used in instructing learners was given by Mrs V. Kavanagh, swimming coach at the Villa Maria College, at the college’s annual swimming sports yesterday. Rosalie O’Reilly, with points, won the senior championship; Ann Power, with nine points, won the intermediate title, and Lois Britain, with six points, won the junior title. Miss Lynette Norman, beat the New Zealand time for the senior i women’s 150 yards backstroke lat a swimming carnival in Blen- : heim on Saturday night, j Miss Norman, who swam alone in a special attempt, recorded ■lmin 49.25ec. lowering the old i record by 3.2 sec. However, it is thought that the required three days’ notice of intention to attempt a New Zealand record had not been given by Miss Norman and it is probable that there will be no application for a record.
