Guards Needed For Heaters
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 10.
After April 1, all heaters with electric elements, electric and gas fires and oil-burning heaters must be fitted with a robust guard securely attached to the heater, says the Health Department in a statement on new safety rules for heating appliances. The guards will be subject to an effective test by probing and with inflammable flanelette.
Quoting figures on ‘ accidents caused by fire and explosion from combustible material, the department says the new regulations are an attempt to reduce this danger. To allow leeway for heaters manufactured or imported before April 1, 1958, sales of types of heaters without the safety fittings may be made until April 1, 1959, the department says.
