CAR ROLLS OFF ROAD Driver Seriously Injured
When his car rolled over on the Lyttelton-Sumner highway, near the School for the Deaf, late on Saturday night, Warren Hobbs, of Somes road, Lyttelton, was thrown clear and struck a barbed wire fence. The car continued to roll down the hillside and came to rest, about a chain below the roadway, on its wheels and with the lights still burning. Mr N. E. Kirk, M.P., and his wife, who were following Mr Hobbs’s car down the hill, stopped and ran to the assistance of the injured man. He was unconscious and caught up in a tangled mass of broken wires. While Mrs Kirk went for help and to call an ambulance, Mr Kirk cut Mr Hobbs free from the wire and made him as comfortable as possible until a St, John ambulance arrived. Nearby residents, who were summoned by Mrs Kirk, arrived with blankets. Mr Hobbs was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where he was admitted at 10.45 p.m. with head injuries and concussion. Late last evening, he was still on the seriously ill list, but was showing signs of improvement.
