Theatre Noise

Sir, —At a concert given by the National Orchestra in Christchurch Within recent times extraneous sounds reached such proportions that the overseas guest conductor took the drastic step of stopping the performance to remonstrate with the audience. As a similar reprimand must surely be emminent at the ballet, may I suggest that the Theatre Royal be altered to provide not only circle, stalls and gallery but also a pit, preferably bottomless, where all chatterers, sibilant whisperers, etc., may be more suitably accommodated. —Yours. R. J. CRANE. March 9, 1958.
