Polo Kihikihi Wins Savile Cup
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, March 9.
Excellent polo was seen in the final of the Savile Cup, the premier polo championship of New Zealand, at Claudelands yesterday, when Kihikihi defeated Morrinsville, 4-3. Kihikihi led by 2-0 at half-time. In the fourth chukka, Morrinsville asserted itself, and playing its best polo of the match, evened the scores. Just before the end of the chukka, however, Kihikihi scored again, to take the lead. In the fifth chukka, Morrinsville again evened, but in the final chukka Kihikihi, which beat the New South Wales team on Friday, scored the only goal.
Both sides played grand polo, but Kihikihi had the edge on Morrinsville by hitting more cleanly at vital moments. A. Kay was outstanding on attack for Kihikihi and A. Elliott was the keystone of the defence. Both T. Mellows and T. Douglas were always prominent in the Morrinsville team.
The Hawke’s Bay team played good polo to beat New South Wales in a non-competition match by 6 goals to 3. Poverty Bay won the New Zealand junior championship by beating Cambridge.
