BOWLS Snedden Wins Centre’s Open Singles Tourney

S. J. Snedden (Linwood) the only South Island player included in the New Zealand bowling team nominated for the Empire Games, on Saturday joined the small band of players who wear a five star badge. He won his fifth centre tournament by beating K. G. Shivas (Mona Vale) in the open singles. Close drawing was not the order of the the Edgewqre green being very fast. In the early stages of the final play was fairly even, but well in the second half Shivas went into the lead. However, exact drawing by Snedden brought the score level with one head left to play.

After Snedden had played his first bowl nearly on to the kitty, Shivas played up to the head with his three bowls to try to rest the shot bowl back or take the kitty away. In all three shots he failed, and left Snedden with four shots to win the game, 20-16. The final of the champion of champions pairs was al"'' decided, the honours going to the Fendalton pair, T. A. Leitch and L. J. Evans, who beat W. Hayes and A. Charteris (Belfast), 26-16. In the earlier rounds the Fendalton pair played very soundly and they maintained their form in the final. On the first four heads the scoring was even, with Fendalton leading 4-3, but over the next three heads Fendalton improved its position to lead 11-3. Belfast then took a few heads but on the thirteenth, when Fendalton took a four, Belfast was still eight down. Heavy scoring

by Fendalton on’ the next three neads brought its score to 24, and though ' Belfast scored eight to Fendalton’s two over the next four heads it was beaten 26-16, with the last head left unplayed. In the final of the colts’ fours for the Robinson Shield, South Brighton was too strong for St. Martins. Play was even over the first eight heads at 8-all, but South Brighton then forged ahead, and on the fifteenth head scored a seven and then on the next a four. South Brighton went on to win by 29 points to 14. Three rounds of the champion of champions fours were concluded on Saturday on the Edgeware and South Brighton greens. One of the surprises was the elimination of C. L. Spearman (R.S.A.) by W. Cooke. (Canterbury).

With the games being played on the sudden-death principle there were only six fours left at the end of the day’s play. The concluding rounds will be played next Saturday.
