The judicial committee of the Wellington Racing Club issued the following report on Saturday’s racing at Trentham:— Ngaio Highweight In the "Ngaio Highweight. Corsican (J. W. Harris) tailed off after the six furlongs and finished a long way back. Harris said the horse would not respond to hard riding. A veterinary surgeon’s examination showed that although the horse was listless there was nothing seriously amiss with it. Mr H. W. Moore, part-owner and trainer, said that because of a mishap in transport arrangements the horse had to be taken from Palmerston North late on the morning of the race. V. H. Simpson, rider of Nobly Born, and A. J. Murray, rider of Royal Gilt, both broke their whips in the closing stages of the race. I. Bradbury, the owner-trainer of the winner. Warlock, was fined £5 for being uncooperative and disrespectful at the swabbing of WarIcck aftefi the race. Challenge Stakes After the North Island Challenge Stakes G. F. Hughes, rider of Melanion, and the patrol steward at the home turn were questioned about Melanion being hampered for room by the winner. Cardinal King. On the patrol steward’s statement that there was sufficient room for Melanion on the inside of Cardinal King, the judge’s placings were confirmed. Autumn Handicap An inquiry was held into the falls near the six furlongs in the Autumn. Handicap, of Oracle (J. W. Harris) and Calcutta Sweep (W. J. Broughton). The falls caused interference to Canon and Highlander.
The committee found that the falls were accidental, caused by Oracle* and Calcutta Sweep colliding after Oracle had broken a foreleg. Oracle was destroyed. Harris was fit to ride later in the day, but Broughton injured an ankle and was unable to fulfil further engagements. S. A. Brown, trainer of Honest John, was fined £lO for the late scratching of the horse.
Tinakori Hack Around the turn into the straight in the Tinakori Hack Handicap. Fitnah (G. F. Hughes) the leader, was hanging out badly and in spite of the rider’s effort to control the horse it hampered Aqaba which was on the outside. Fitnah displayed the same hanging tendencies in its two previous winning starts.
Thompson Handicap In the Thompson Handicap, Bugle Boy (A. C. Messervy) met interference near the five furlongs and was checked again a furlong later. Bugle Boy was on the rails in a mid-field position and Messervy said that the interference was caused by the packed nature of the field. Over the last two furlongs and a half Cheyenne (W. Hanlan) had insufficient room when trying to force its way through along the rails. Hanlin confirmed the official view that his trouble was not caused by any other horse or rider.
Silverstrcam Hack Handicap Outside the last furlong in the Sil verstream Hack Handicap. Television (C. I. Davis) suffered interference when Kilroy (J. R. O’Neill) which races in blinkers, hung in under pressure. The patrol steward confirmed O’Neill’s statement that he had both hands on the off-side rein in an effort to prevent the interfer-
ence. No action was taken against I O’Neill.
