SWIMMING WHARENUI SHIELD IS WON BY FENDALTON

Although the club was re-form-ed only two years ago after being in recess since 1939. Fendalton showed its strength in young swimmers when it beat the strong Wharenui, Spreydon, and Elmwood teams in the junior relay for the Wharenui Shield on Saturday. The event was swum at an inter-club carnival at the Wharenui bath. Another formerly weak club, North Beach, also did well to take second place. Last year’s winner, Wharenui, was third. The Fendalton team’s time was Imin 32.65ec. a new record for the six-a-side relay over 150 yards. The Mayor of Riccarton and patron of the Wharenui Swimming Club <Mr E. J. Bradshaw) presented the Wharenui Shield to the captain of the Fendalton | team, Paul Schmidt. Mr Bradshaw congratulated the Fendalton club on winning the shield for the first time. Largely because he performed only dives of low degree difficulty, the New Zealand intermediate and senior diving champion and nominee for the Empire Games, R. L. Hodge, was placed second in the dive. Hodge was beaten by R. Erickson (Wharenui) by half a point. After the event, Hodge demonstrated some of the dives which won him the national senior title last month. C. McFadden, another GcJllcibury Empire Games nominee,! swam the 220 yards freestyle mi the fastest time of the aay—zmin| 37.8 sec. In the 440 yards freestyle,! McFadden was content to use it as a training period, and swam backstroke. Even then, his time of smin 35.65ec was very good. The president of the Wharenui club (Mr D. Cain) made a presentation to the secretary of the Canterbury Swimming Centre and member of the New Zealand' council (Miss Doreen Brown) on behalf of the swimmers. Miss Brown will leave New Zealand soon to study swimming administration in Britain, and will watch the New Zealand swimming team compete at the Empire Games at Cardiff. Results were:— Boys’ Events
