AUSTRALIAN BY-ELECTION
Liberal Majority Reduced (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 9. The Government won the byelection for the Federal seat of Parramatta, near Sydney, yesterday, with a greatly reduced majority. The Liberal Party (Government) candidate, Sir Garfield Barwick, had a lead of 4201 votes over his Labour opponent, Aiderman D. J. Mahoney, when counting closed last night. Only a few postal and absentee votes remained to be counted.
Parramatta was held by the former Minister for Supply, Mr Howard Beale, who resigned to take up a post as the Australian Ambassador to the United States. He won the seat by 10,223 votes at the last Federal elections in December, 1955.
The final figures last night were: Sir Garfield Barwick (Liberal) 21,134.
Aiderman D. J. Mahoney (Labour) 16,933.

The Federal Opposition leader, Dr. Herbert Evatt, commenting today on the by-election, said that the result showed that public opinion had swung heavily against the Liberal Menzies Government.
