DEFENCE VOTE IN FRANCE

Gaillard Faces Crucial Test (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) PARIS, March 7. The French National Assembly is expected to vote today on a compromise defence budget on which the French Prime Minister, Mr Felix Gaillard, has staged the life of his four-month-old coalition Government. However, political observers do not consider the Government to be in immediate in spite of severe criticism that it is not making a big enough effort m Algeria, and doubts among other coalition parties about its handling of North African policy. The defence compromise involves sending 28,000 more troops to Algeria to replace men demobilised after completing their military service. In a speech today the Prime Minister is expected to appeal for renewed backing for “the defence of France and of Algeria.” The increased cost of Algerian operations, including plans for a “forbidden zone” along the Tunisian frontier, is put at £63 million.
