MIDDLE EAST RIVALRIES
Egypt, Syria And Arab Kings
Press Association—Copyright)
(Rec. 8 p.m.) DAMASCUS, March 6. A chasm appeared to divide the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria from the Arab monarchies of the Middle East today, as newspapers gave prominence to allegations that “King Saud plotted to assassinate Nasser and destroy the union.” While President Nasser avoided directly naming Kind Saud as author of the plot, the Syrian Army Intelligence chief, Colonel Abdel Hamid. Serraj, has said he was offered more than £2O million by the King’s father-in-law if he would arrange the successful operation of the plot.
There has been no comment so far from the heavily guarded Saudi Arabian Embassy in Damascus.
The Saudi Ambassador, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Benzeid, left for Riyadh a week ago.
