Manners On Buses
Sir, —As a “Kiwi” recently returned from a holiday in Britain I wish to protest at the lack of manners by bus passengers in Christchurch. Over there the most noticeable feature was the orderliness of people waiting at a bus stop, where, no-one was allowed to push forward. I was impressed with the barriers at a bus stop which made for orderly queuing. Another point was the. discipline of high school children on buses. . On many buses, notices were displayed giving the conductor or driver authority to eject anyone under the age of 16 who failed to give up his spat when adults were standing. I saw this carried out on only the odd occasion as most children had excellent manners. Cannot the Christchurch Transport Board adopt a similar attitude? The average New Zealand bus passenger’s complacency in these matters disgusts me.—Yours, etc., SHE’LL BE RIGHT. March 7, 1958.
