MUTTONBIRDERS DELAYED
No Ship Available
At Bluff
"The Press” Special Service BLUFF, March 7
There is no shipping available for the muttonbirds, according to a telegram received at Bluff from the Minister of Marine (Mr Fox).
“I have had the opportunity of examining the representations made to the Prime Minister in connexion with the transport of the muttonbirders,” said Mr Fox. “I myself made personal inquiries and the department also endeavoured to help and I regret to say that the results indicate there is no possibility of shipping being available.”
Birders at Bluff do not know what they will do now, btit a meeting is being called for March 9. Usually the birders leave Bluff about March 15 to make preparations for the opening date of April 1.
It means a big loss to the mut-ton-birders. Any fishing vessels which might take the birders are asking for 350 birds, which at 2s 6d each (most birders can get 3s each for their birds) means that each person is asked to pay the equivalent of £43 for transport. Few, if any, boats are available. Birders were coming to Bluff from as far north as Auckland and Masterton. the home of those with beneficiary rights to the southern islands, and one family from Kaiapoi has already arrived at the port.
