PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
The Canterbury provincial badminton representative of 1957, A. Ghani, has left New Zealand for
his home in Malaya. Ghani, who played in the Canterbury Division I team in all its matches last season, was in C h r is tchurch on a one-year technical instruction course. In the
match against Southland. Ghani won a set from the national N. R. Thompson. He played for the University I team in the Christchurch competitions. ☆ The Marist Rugby Club has benefited from the transfer to Christchurch of the former West Coast full-back, K. Brown, who has joined the club. Brown, who has been in Australia for the last 18 months, played for St. Mary’s, Hokitika, and represented the West Coast as a five-eighths and full-back for four seasons. He was also an All Black trialist in 1953.
A promising newcomer to Christchurch cricket is the captain of last year’s first eleven at Nelson College, P. S. Park. Park is a right-arm swing bowler and a left-handed batsman. Playing in one of the West Christchurch-University’s second-grade teams last Saturday, he impressed onlookers with his medium-paced bowling. A brother of the University cricketer and footballer, J. B. Park, he is a first-year student at the University of Canterbury. ☆ The former All Black inside back. C. J. Loader, hopes to be playing for the Hutt team in
the coming season. Just two years ago. Loader was injured at practice, and it was thought unlikely that he would play again. However, he has been training for more than six weeks, and
provided he gets a satisfactory medical report he will resume his Rugby career. His injury was to muscles in his left knee.
The Hutt Valley l«ft-handef, T. Meale, who has been selected for the New Zealand tour of England,
scored 154 not out in a club match last Saturday, and brought his aggregate for the season, in club matches only, to 601. with an average of 100.2. Meale made
his century for Hutt against Petone United, a team which includes **. W. Blair, and he scored his runs in better than even time. ☆ One of the most promising young women cricketers in Christchurch is L. Todd, pf the Kotahi team. She bowls at medium pace, bats forcefully, and her 36 last Saturday was a fine effort. Her all-round ability suggests she will be a representative player before long. ☆ Although he has made no big scores this season, the former Canterbury and New Zealand batsman. J. G. Leggat, has batted consistently for Old Boys. In his 12 innings, he has reached 20 nine times, and although his highest score is 39, he has an average of 25.
