ATHLETICS M. Richards Vaults 14ft At National Meeting

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 7. The Otago pole vaulter M. D. Richards broke his own national record by three inches when the New Zealand athletic championships opened at the Hutt recreation ground today. Richards’ vault of 14ft was the first performance at that height in the southern hemisphere by a southern hemisphere athlete. He won the event by Ift 9in from G. A. Brown, of Wellington.

The championships were run today in excellent weather on a track that was not particularly fast. Six finals were completed.

The Auckland team of B. C. Robinson, B. Wilson, G. Davey, and M. L. Rae returned 41.8 sec to break the New Zealand 440 yards relay record. The previous time was 42sec set up by an Auckland team last season. The other outstanding performance was a near record by the Aucklander, L. R. Mills. In the final of the discus, he missed his own national mark by one inch and a half. Mills tossed the discus 160 ft 9in. Wellington’s R. J. Harris, who took second place in the discus with a throw of 142 ft Bin, was 18ft lin short of Mills’ mark. Perhaps one of the best efforts of the day was the stylish performances of Auckland’s B. Magee, who retained his national six-mile title by more than 220 yards from a fellow Aucklander, M. Hellier. His time was 29min 24.6sec—Imin o.6sec slower than his national record set last season. Magee lapped all but Hellier and A. McKnight, of Wellington.

D. McD. Clarke, of Otago, who retained the hammer throw title, whirled the hammer only lOin short of his own national mark. His distance was 164 ft Bin. R. A. Williams, of Auckland, showed some brilliant smatterings of form in the long jump championship. He jumped 22ft U|in to take the title. His effort, however, was Ift 42in short of the national record held by Auckland’s W. B. K. Hough. The Auckland Olympic representative sprinter, Rae, romped home in both his 100 and 220 yards heats. He was never challenged at any stage. Abbreviations used in the following results are:—(A.) Auckland, (W.j Wellington, (Wo.) Waikato, (O.) Otago. (C.) Canterbury, (W.C.N.1.)
