TRADE MISSION DEFERRED
Lack Of Interest Shown
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 7.
A proposal to send a trade mission to Australia has been deferred, but the position will be examined in six months’ time. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) said today that, at a recent meeting of the. committee set up last year by his predecessor 'to examine the proposal to send a trade mission to Australia, it was decided to recommend to the new Minister that the proposal should be deferred. The committee considered that in view of the lack of spontaneous support from commercial and manufacturing • interests, it could not reasonably recommend otherwise. The committee consisted of representatives of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, the radiata pine division of the Dominion Sawmillers’ Federation, the New Zealand Wholesale Fish Merchants’ Association, and the Associated Banks.
Mr Holloway said that, while in the circumstances he agreed with the ; committee’s view, he regretted the lack of interest shown by exporters and potential exporters. The Government was keen to see every avenue for increasing exports explored, and trade missions could play a pari in any export drive.
