Athletics NATIONAL ROAD WALK

P. Westfield Wins ’ Eventful Race c t (New Zealand ty-ess Association) WELLINGTON, March 6. The favourite, D. McNabb s (Auckland) was disqualified, and c D. Thompson (Wellington) col- = lapsed when the national 20,000 metres road walk,, the opening event of the New Zealand athletic championships, was held at Lower Hutt tonight. P. Westfield (West Coast, North Island) won the event in Ihr 55min, with L. R. Fortune (Otago) second, about 80 yards down. Gardiner (Wellington) was third. McNabb, who finished a close second to the Olympic gold medallist, Norman Read, in the same event at last year’s championship, was disqualified for lift- i ing his foot. He is expected to < appeal. . i Only four of the six starters « finished the race, which began at 1 the Hutt recreation ground, went through the Naenae circuit and 1 finished at the starting point. i R. Chugg (Wellington) was 1 fourth, 11 minutes down on the winner. r ; i MISS CHAMBERLAIN AT AUCKLAND I Reason For Lack Of Form Many Canterbury athletics en- • thusiasts were somewhat surprised i to find that Miss M. Chamberlain, i the Canterbury women’s sprints ; champion, could not manage to gain higher placings than second ; in the 100 yards and third in the 75 yards, at the women’s national ' championships at Auckland last week-end. It was not until last j evening, when the manager of the team (Mr R. A. Linton), read his report to a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury ' Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, that some light was thrown upon her apparent lapse from form. When the team arrived in Auckland by Viscount on Thursday evening, Miss Chamberlain discovered that the bag containing her running gear had not been loaded aboard the aircraft, and was still at Christchurch, said Mr Linton. x When the missing bag did not arrive in Auckland that day Miss Chamberlain had become upset, and when the bag had not arrived on the Friday morning, the day on which she was to run in her first events, ’ her agitation increased. i The bag, which it was later t learned had not been off-loaded from the bus to the airport, finally made its appearance less t than two hours before she was , due to compete. The nervous strain of believing she would have to compete in unaccustomed gear had undoubtedly sapped much of ’ her energy, and had prevented ; her from giving of her best, he ’ said. ; MARIST CLUB [ Miss J.
