First Night Of Meeting

(From Our Own Reporter) PALMERSTON N., March 6. Canterbury junior cyclists rode well on the opening night of the New Zealand cycling championships at Palmerston North, four being well placed in sections of the 500 metres sprint. They are T. Kenny, B. Hazeldine, M. Parker, and T. Weir. Kenny caused the biggest surprise when he beat L Watts (West Coast, North Island) in the first section. Watts was runner-up for the junior title last year. Kenny’s time of 12fisec was only o.2sec outside the New Zealand senior record held by R. Ploog (Australia) and J. Robertson (Auckland). Hazeldine, the Canterbury junior sprint champion, had little difficulty in beating his main opponent, R. Wagner (Auckland). Parker rode brilliantly to win his first round, and Weir won his way back into prominence by beating D. Oakley (Wellington). Weir was beaten in his first round by B. Nicholson (Waikato). W. Dalton (Auckland) broke the record for the 1000 metres time trial. He covered the distance in Imin 12.2 sec, beating his previous record by I.2sec. Dalton has already done lmin 11.9 sec, a record that is awaiting ratification. W. Johnston, of Waikato, took second place, equalling the previous record, and G.
