FLOOR POLISH AS FIRE HAZARD

Department’s Warning To Schools The Department of Education is advising schools to use a standard type of floor polish that would reduce fire danger. In a circular received yesterday by the Christchurch Boys’ High School Board of Governors, the Ministry of Works reported that in the annual fire inspection of schools in one district it had been found that most of the oils used on the floors were subject to spontaneous ignition. In one case mops had ignited in storage. The storage of mops separately and in the open air was recommended. “It is recommended that boards standardise on certain types of floor polishes which are not subject to spontaneous ignition; and which do not contain inflammable solvents which might ignite on application, or through the use of high-speed electric polishers,” said the circular. “It is understood that there are water emulsion polishes available which are quite safe to use under any circumstances.
