Qualities Of Glass

The quality of glass depends largely upon its composition and treatment. The principal ingredients are sand, lime, and some alkali which are fused together. Glass is either blown into shape, pressed, or moulded. Hand work is still used for gdod-quality articles.

Lime glass is dull in finish, and usually pressed or moulded. Flint glass, or crystal, is heavier and more brilliant than lime glass. Bottle glass is a cheap grade, which breaks more easily and has many defects.

Ornamentation is formed on glass by cutting, etching, engraving, painting and moulding. Texture is achieved by thickness, or by deliberate inclusion of bubbles in the glass.
