ADDINGTON MARKET RECORD YARDING FOR SEASON OF STORE SHEEP

A very heavy yarding of store sheep—a record this season at 29,837 —was offered at the Addington Market yesterday. The increase was spread over ail sections, and it says much for Addington as a sales’ centre that most were sold at sound rates.

Nearly 8000 store lambs were yarded, with a predominance of light and inferior sorts, and though the market was easier it was no “landslide.”

An exceptionally big yarding of two-looths, most very useful sorts, met a good market, specially good Romneys, and values were better.

The heavy and nondescript offering of older ewes sold well into the evening, and though the top sheep held their own, there was definitely a fall in values for ewes in other categories, some making just above freezing rates. The sale finished fairly evenly. .

The total entry for the sale was 29,837 head, compared with 19,651 last week. It included 7880 lambs, 5813 two-tooth ewes. 14,544 older ewes, and 600 wethers.

STORE LAMBS The muster of store lambs was strong in numbers, but, with a few pleasmg exceptions, not very pronounced in point of quality. The entry totalled 7880, compared with 4476 last week, and it was a very mixed grill. There was a good muster of buyers, and an excellent clearance was effected. The price range was very wide, and values generally showed a drop on those of last week, although not very pronounced in the case of the top pens. The best of the wether lambs were easier by up to 2s 6d, medium sorts were cheaper by about 6s, and light and inferior lambs showed a drop of 8s to 10s. As for ewe lambs, apart from a few attractive pens of Romneys, values appeared to be only 4s to 5s a head better than wether lambs.

The market for wether lambs was topped by the Willesden Estate (Birdling’s Flat) with the sale of 287 at 42s 6d to 475, with 70 at the higher price being Down cross lambs. P. Tuuta (Loburn) sold a pen of 32 at 465, and T. A. Russell (Quail Island) sold 63 at the same price. R. G. Leybum (Templeton) was paid 45s 6d for 44, and the estate F. C. de Lambert (Cheviot) received 45s 6d for 70 lambs. The ewe lamb market was topped by H. C. Urlwin (Cooper’s Creek, Oxford) with an outstanding line of well-bred Romneys, 225 selling at 765. The best of the Corriedale lambs were selling from 47s to 50s. Values were:—

Best wether lambs, 38s to 455, with odd sales to 475. Medium wether lambs, 32s to 375. Light wether lambs, 23s to 30s. Inferior and culls, 12s to 20s.

Dunn (Amberley), 127 wether lambs at 28s to 40s; J. Summerville (West Coast), 18 Romney ewe lambs at 63s 6d. TWO-TOOTH EWES The excellent yarding of twotooths—the biggest of the season—was a feature of the sale. Entries totalled 5813, compared with 3861 last week. With plenty of buying power in evidence and a gallery of fair-sized proportions, a good, sound sale was experienced on a rising market, at least as far as Romneys were concerned. Leaving out one sale at £8 5s for a phenomenally good pen of Romneys, values were up on . last week’s Addington market by 5s to 6s a head, but could not be said to be comparable with the extraordinary prices paid at Little River fair for one or two special pens of Romneys. Values in the fine-woolled section were hard on those of last week, and with the exception of one or two good pens which also sold at late rates were of the usual mixed quality.

The market was topped by a consignment from M. H. Chittock (Rose stud, Lincoln). These were stud ewes (although no transfer was available), and the line of 100 sold from £7 10s to £8 ss. A better idea of values was afforded by the sale of a large line of Romneys—4BB all told—from a Southland client, which sold from £5 4s to £6. Two pens of these ewes made £6, another two pens £5 17s 6d, and another pen £5 19s. The market for fine wools was topped by W. Frizzell (Swannanoa), with the sale of 96 Corriedales at £5.

OLDER EWES There was a very heavy yarding of adult ewes, and selling proceeded to 7 o’clock. It was a very mixed yarding, the over-all quality probably being the poorest this season. Nevertheless, a moderately large gallery followed the sale for the greater part of the afternoon, and a reasonably good clearance was effected. Inquiry for good-mouthed sound Romneys, and for the best quality fine wools was still very keen, but only the top lines of these might be quoted as firm on late rates, and these sold up to 78s. Other four-year-olds in the "good” category eased slightly in values, and poorer and medium sorts were down by fully 4s, in some cases more, mainly

for the inferior sorts, and' these made just above freezing rates. Pyne, Gould. Guinness Ltd., sold: on account D. Dobson (Blenheim), 225 ewes at 48s to 50s; W.
