57 Wins In 30 Weeks The leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, has had an average of almost two winning rides a week this season. He has had 57 winning rides, nine short of the total which won him the jockeys’ premiership last season. R. J. Skelton, with 37 winning rides, is second to his brother, just ahead of the former Australian jockey, W. A. Smith, who has had 35 wins. The Auckland jockey, G. F. Hughes, is fourth with 30 winning rides. Hughes, who was leading jockey in 195455 way fourth on the winning jockeys’ list last season with 42 wins.
The Riccarton horsemen, E. G. Low and A. J. Stokes, are sixth and equal tenth, respectively. Low has had 27 wins and Stokes, 19. V? J. Sellars, who was second to W. D. Skelton last season with 48 winning rides, has had 17 wins this season.
The Te Rapa jockey, J. H. Hely, who rode for only part of last season and was sixty-third on the winnings jockeys’ list, is seventh this season with 22 wins; K. Nuttall, who was ninety-sixth last year, is eighth with 21 wins. Jockeys with 20 or more winning rides are.—W. D. Skelton, 57; R. J. Skelton, 37; W. A. Smith, 36; G. F. Hughes, 30; J. W. Harris, W. English Jockey At Trentham “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, March 5. D. L. Jones, an English jockey, was present at Trentham yesterday riding trackwork. He has been granted a clearance by the New Zealand Racing Conference and is available to ride on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. Jones, who has ridden successfully in most Continental countries, India, South Africa, Malaya and Ceylon, is on a world tour.
