EAST GERMAN COMMUNISTS Party Leaders “On Leave”

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) BERLIN, March 3. The East German Communist Party leader (Mr Walter Ulbricht) who ousted three opponents from high positions in the party last month, today went on “three weeks’ recreational leave,” according to the East German news agency A.D.N. The brief announcement did not say where he was going. Both the top East German leaders are now absent from Berlin. ■ The Prime Minister, Mr Otto Grotewohl. left suddenly for what was officially described as a “cure” at the height of the party crisis last month when Mr Karl Schirdewan, formerly regarded as the “crown prince” of the regime, and Mr Ernst Wollweber, former security minister, were removed from the central committee. At the same time, Mr Fred Oelssner, the party’s chief theoretician, was dismissed from the Politbureau and from his post as a deputy premier.
