ANZAC MEMORIAL AT SUEZ

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) PERTH. March 5.

“We have no intention of letting the Suez Anzac memorial stay rotting in the canal,” a New Zealander. Mr M. M. Samuel, a British Empire Service League executive member, said in Fremantle today. New Zealanders were right behind the idea of Albany as the new site because so many Anzacs sailed from there in World War I. Mr Samuel is a passenger in the cargo-liner Clan Sutherland and is returning to England after the league’s biennial conference in Canberra. The memorial was pulled down by Egyptians during the Suez riots in 1956. Last year, former servicemen’s organisations put forward the suggestion that if the Anzac memorial in Suez would not be restored to its original site, it should be brought to Albany and erected there.
