ATHLETICS Keen Competition For N.Z. Junior Titles

(New Zealand -Press Association)

AUCKLAND, February 28. • Auckland was the most successful province after the first day’s competition at the national junior and women’s athletic championships held at Eden Park today in brilliantly fine weather. It led in the junior section for the H. L. Towers shield with 23 points, and in the women’s Lumley shield with 14 points.

The outstanding event of the day was the bettering of B. C. Robinson’s long jump record of 23ft lin set in 1956 by D. Norris, the national hop, step and jump champion, with a leap of 23ft sin. He did this in the qualifying trials with his best-ever jump. Norris’s brother, P. Norris, won the discus final with a throw more than six feet further than his nearest rival, R. Tait (Otago). In the track events, the ' times for the women’s 80 metres hurdles and the women’s 100 yards, showed that the track was easy rather than dead after the recent rains. Both the title-holder and record-holder, Miss M. Stuart (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay), and Miss A. Brain (Auckland), fighting for the title this year, recorded 11.5 sec in their heats. Miss M. Chamberlain (Canterbury) and Miss B. Weigel (Auckland) had llsec and 11.2 sec respectively for their 100 yards heats. In the final, Miss Weigel got there by a yard from Miss Chamberlain in Miss Weigel has registered 10.9 sec several times lately. Track Too Short Consequently, when the 220 yards junior heats were run eyebrows shot up somewhat when D. Norris (Auckland) coasted in in 22.2 sec—the New Zealand record is 21.8 sec. In the other heat, the place-getters appeared to be just trying to qualify, also in 22.25ec. Eyebrows shot even higher when B. C. Robinson recorded 20.9 sec in the senior 220 yards invitation event to be only .9sec outside D. Sime’s world record.

This led to officials inquiring further and it was anounced later than all 220 yards races had been started from a relay peg in error—approximately 11 yards short of the full distance. The placings will stand but the times will be ignored. Miss Weigel gave everyone a fright in the long jump by nojumping twice and needing the last one to qualify. She did this with a good 19ft Bin in spite of a badly-swollen heel.

Miss Chamberlain withdrew from the women’s 440 yards—she is evidently concentrating on the 220 yards—and, as a result, the race became a struggle between Miss J. Heatly (Auckland) and Miss Fay Mcßeath (Canterbury). Miss Heatley showed great courage to fight on and slowly overhaul Miss Mcßeath in the straight. The meeting will Continue tomorrow.
