FORMER MAYOR OF LONDON
Visit By Sir Cullum Welch Sir Cullum Welch, Lord Mayor of London last year, and Lady Welch will arrive in Christchurch on March 8 for a four-day visit. Sir Cullum Welch will visit New Zealand on a fortnight’s business trip for C. C. Wakefield and Company, Ltd., of which he is a director.
Sir Cullum Welch was born at Beckenham, near London, in 1895, and was educated at Alleyn’s School, Dulwich. He joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1914, serving through the
First World War and gaining the Military Cross. For a period he was on the staff of the 18th Division in France. During the Second World War he commanded the 3rd Home Guard A.A. Regiment, with the rank of lieu-tenant-colonel, and was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1944.
A solicitor in the City of London, Sir Cullum Welch has always taken an interest in civic affairs and was a member of the Court of Common Council in the City of London from 1931 to 1947. In 1956 he was Chief Commoner. He was elected as Aiderman in 1947 and served as Sheriff of the City in 1950 and 1951, receiving a knighthood in 1952. He was installed in office as Lord Mayor of London on November 8, 1956. At the end of his year of office he was created a baronet.
Sir Cullum Welch and Lady Welch were married in 1921. They have a daughter and a son.
