(NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) EVANSTON (Illinois), Feb. 16. Lew Hoad beat Pancho Gonzales, 6-4, 6-4, today to increase his lead to 13-7 in their struggle for the world professional tennis championship.
The 23-year-old Australian kept Gonzales on the defensive with a powerful service and sharp, backhand slices. Gonzales showed only flashes of his power and accuracy. Earlier, Tony Trabert took a 4-3 lead in his series with Pancho Segura with an 8-6 victory. Gonzales and Trabert teamed together to beat Hoad and Segura, 8-6. Inter-Firm Matches Results in matches played at the South Christchurch Tennis Club’s lighted courts in the Slazenger Shield inter-flrm competition were: Crop Research v. Woolworths W. Austin and M. Jordan beat A. Hurin and D. Donnelly, 9-1; G. Stevenson and M. Jordan beat A. Hurin and K. Adair, 9-1; N. Austin and E. Stevenson beat D. Donnelly and K. Adair, 7-4. Crop Research won by 3 sets to 0. Railway v. Hicks and Ainger Simpson and Papps beat Bergin and Young, 9-2; Liddell and Simpson drew with Young and Crofts, 6-6; Liddell and Papps beat Crofts and Bergin, 6-3. Railway won by 2\' a sets to Whitcombes v. State Advances II Wylie and Barcham beat McGill and Daly, 9-2; Preston and Wylie beat McGill and McGaley, 7-3; Preston and Barcham drew with Daly and McGaley, 4-4. Whitcombes won by 2*,i sets to *,&. Hutchinson Motors v. A.M.P. Rhodes and Rosendale beat Simpson and Francis, 7-1; Rosendale and Mills beat Francis and Whitcombe, 5-3; Mills and Rhodes beat Whitcombe and Simpson, 6-2. Hutchinson Motors won by 3 sets to 0. Marathon v. Fletcher Holdings Knox and Hill lost to Payne and McFarlane, 5-6; Hill and Currie beat McFarlane and Gregory, 9-6; Currie and Knox beat Payne and Gregory, 8-5. Marathon won by 2 sets to 1. Bowie and Bowie v. State Advances I Stringer and Parris beat Heath and Casey, 7-2; Rout and Stringer drew with Heath and Sullivan, 5-5; Parris and Rout lost to Casey and Sullivan, 4-8.
