FOOD POISONS 31 PERSONS
Cold Meat Suspected
Thirty-one persons, including staff and .inmates, were affected by food poisoning in an institution for the aged in Christchurch last week. The outbreak was not severe, but caused the sufferers considerable inconvenience, mainly from vomiting and diarrhoea. Health authorities suspect that the outbreak was caused by a staphylococcal infection. The Health Department is at present carrying out tests on samples of cold meat which were fed to those affected by the poisoning. The Deputy-Medical Officer of Health (Dr. W. I. Patterson) said yesterday that meats which were stored were often traced as the source for this type of infection. He said this outbreak emphasised the need for careful handling of food, especially during the summer.
