PRODUCTION OF PASTURE SEEDS
Steady Increase
Steady gains in the production of machine-dressed grass, clover, lucerne and brassica seed for the 1956-57 season were recorded in the January issue of the Abstract of Statistics, but large increases occurred in the production of crested dogstail. Timothy, and white and Suckling white clover, and Suckling white clover mixtures.
Detailed figures of production, with those for 1955-56 in parenthesis, in thousands of pounds, were: crested dogstail, 1584 (654); Timothy, 311 (139); white clover, 8211 (4599); Suckling clover, 456 (223); Suckling white clover mixture, 603 (320). Several other varieties, particularly brown top, made substantial increases, although the totals recorded did not reach those of some seasons before 1955-56.
Yacht Race Abandoned.—The Auckland-Suva yacht race this year has been abandoned through lack of entries. When entries closed on Saturday night only three boats had been nominated. The closing date had been extended for a fortnight.—(PA.)
