CLUTHA STILL HIGH
Banks Holding “Fairly WeH”
(New Zea Lana Press . Association; DUNEDIN, February 17. Backed by a strong flow from swollen lakes, the Clutha river fell only 3ft today to a level of 68.7 ft. Even with favourable weather the river will be high for a week or two. Three roads are impassable in South Otago. Mr I. C. Buchan, the Otago Catchment Board’s engineer at Balclutha. said that the banks were all holding fairly well. There should be a gradual fall in the river, provided the lakes fell and there was no further rain.
At 4 p.m„ the flow at the Roxburgh hydro works measured 58,800 cusecs.
Lake Wanaka dropped three inches today and Lake Wakatipu also dropped. It was impossible to do any killing at the Finegand freezing works, said the general manager, Mr A. C. Stewart, as the works drainage flowed into the Clutha. The river had to fall another inch before killing could resume.
