ATOMIC ROCKET ENGINE

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 16. The United States Air Force announced today that it had awarded a design contract for an atomic rocket engine which might provide the means for man’s first sustained space flight. The contract went 'to the Rocketdyne division of North American Aviation, Inc., which has been working in the field since 1946.

The Air Force said it would represent an extension of “preliminary work” already carried out by Rocketdyne and looked toward "development of a nuclear rocket engine.” Officials said that the programme, called “Project Rover” by the Atomic Energy Commission, was viewed as the most immediately promising source of power for launching man into space.
