£250,000 FOR AGED

Auckland Appeal (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 16. An appeal to raise £250,000 for the old people of Auckland will be launched within the next few weeks. It will be led by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) who will open a radio canvass on March 12. The appeal has the backing of all the leading churches. It is proposed to use the money on 11 housing projects for the aged, and the Government has to grant a 75 per cent, subsidy on approved expenditure. Dr. R. G. McElroy, chairman of the appeal's executive committee, said that in 1006 Auckland's aged population was seven per cent, of the total, or 6000 persons. Today, it is 14 per cent., or more than 50,000. The problem of keeping pace with the rise in numbers was getting beyond the resources of civic, church and other welfare organisations, he said. Even this appeal to the public would provide for only one-third of the needy persons.
