Fixture Spoiled By Rain The early-morning rain, which has dogged Canterbury tennis since Christmas forced a late start to the annual representative fixture between Canterbury and, Wellington, which was played at Wilding Park on Saturday. The matches were started two hours late, and were played on the hard courts. With the weather still threatening in the afternoon, the organisers wisely used 10 courts at once for singles matches, but further rain later in the day caused the abandonment of play. At that stage, Wellington was leading by nine matches to five, with four matches in progress and a further six still to be played. Results were (Wellington names first)
Men's Singles.—J. B. Souter lost to C. W. Pritchard, 8-10, 5-7; B. M. Mackie v. A. L. Blackwell, 6-4, 4-1 (unfinished); P. J. Taylor v. A. D. L. Hunter, 3-6, 2-4 (unfinished); V. J. Hargreaves v. C. G. Judge, 6-3, 3-5 (unfinished); R. L. Davis beat B. W. Crofts, 8-6, 6-2; F. Scarlett beat B. J. Shiriaw, 7-5, 9-7.
Women’s Singles.—Miss J. Kent lost to Miss B. Nelson, 0-6, 4-6; Miss M. Johnston v. Miss G. Hopkinson, 6-3, 3-6, 2-4 (unfinished); Miss A. Brunt beat Mrs J. McKay, 6-3, 6-2; Mrs T. McGregor beat Miss D. Norrie, 6-2, 6-2; Mrs E. Wentzell beat Miss B. Webster, 6-1, 6-3; Miss J. Archibald beat Miss L. Mardon, 6-2, 6-3.
Mixed Doubles.—Souter and Miss Kent beat Blackwell and Miss Nelson, 9-5; Mackie and Miss Johnston beat Hunter and Miss Hopkinson, 9-6; Taylor and Miss Brunt lost to Pritchard and Mrs Mac Kay, 6-9; Hargreaves and Mrs McGregor lost to Judge and Miss Norrie, 4-9; Davis and Mrs Wentzell beat Crofts and Miss Webster, 9-6; Scarlett and Miss Archibald lost to Shirlaw and Miss Mardon, 7-9.
