RACING DUNEDIN CUP MEETING

Canterbury Horses Win Major Races

Shoal outclassed her 15 opponents in the Dunedin Cup, for which she was favourite, at Wingatui on Saturday. She was last but one in a strung-out field three furlongs out, but two furlongs later she was in the lead and galloping away to one of the easiest wins in the race for many years.

It was Shoal’s second win this season for Mr and Mrs J. F. Tutton, of Riccarton. Her first was the weight-for-age Canterbury Cup, in which she was runner-up to Rover but was promoted.

Shoal, a six-year-old mare by Dogger Bank from Belle Fille, was confidently ridden by the Riccarton jockey, C. McDonald, who wasted hard to ride her half a pound overweight at 8-64.

The finish of the cup race was dominated by the females. The runner-up was Desert Cloud, winner of the Gore Cup two starts earlier, and the Riccarton-trained light-weight Money-Go-Round was third. Only a head separated Desert Cloud and Money-Go-Round, but they were two lengths and a half behind the winner. Purser won the Publicans’ Handicap, the second leg pf the double, nearly as easily for Mr R. G. Gerard. Like Shoal, Purser is trained at Riccarton. He has been prepared throughout his career by J. E. Shaw and has now won two races in a short career in open class.

Purser was ridden back on the inner behind six horses coming to the straight, and responded brilliantly when he found racing room, running away over the last half a furlong to win handsomely by two lengths and a half. Holders of tickets on the ShoalPurser combination received £l6 2s for £l.

Airephelia made it a clean sweep for Canterbury horses in the major races when she won the Champagne Stakes. Topweight of 9-0 was no trouble to her. She spurted from a trailing position and won running away by two lengths from Minglow, which beat Maybeso nearly as easily. As in the Dunedin Cup, it was a clean sweep for the fillies. Airephelia was one of three winners from the Oran stable of T. W. Reilly. She was ridden by C. McDonald, who won the Dunedin Cup on Shoal. Salonica and Lady Verona, both Wingatui-trained gallopers, were successful in the Mornington and Berwick Hack Handicaps, the double for course patrons. They returned £7B 18s 6d for £l.

The programme was held in fine weather and the racing was on an easy track. The on-course totalisator turnover was £47,381 ‘los, compared w ith £44318 last year. Cup Running Shoal launched > brilliant run from the tail of 'the field that carried her to the front a furlong out and gave her an effortless win in the Dunedin Cup. She won coasting by two lengths and a hall, from Desert Cloud, which shaded Money-Go-Round. Royal Halyard finished fast for fourth, making it an all-Canter-bury finish. Shoal tailed off by four lengths running through the straight for the first time and gave the leaders, Solstice and Cashmere, a big start entering the last-mile. Cashmere led Solstice by half a length near the six furlongs, where Master David was alongside Solstice, just ahead of Desert Cloud. Ark Royal, Landon, Treasure Pond, Black Star, Money-Go-Round, Pilot Light, Canon, Royal Halyard, Shoal, and Royal Pal. Treasure Pond struck trouble at the half-mile. A furlong later. Solstice dropped back beaten. There, Shoal was still second to last in a field of 16, and her chance looked hopeless. Master David dropped Cashmere on the home turn and Desert Cloud and Money-Go-Round were closing on him when Shoal flashed up wider out on the track. Shoal had the race won in a few strides near the furlong, and could have widened her substantial winning margin without any trouble.

Desert Cloud lasted for second by a head from Money-Go-Round Royal Halyard finished strongly for fourth three lengths back. The weakening Master David was fifth a length ahead of Canon, then there was a head to Ark Royal, which was being hard ridden half a mile out. Next were Landon, Well Cut, Gay Mood, Pilot Light, Treasure Pond, Royal Pal, Solstice, Black Star and Cashmere. Second Leg

Purser was much too good for the others in the Publicans’ Handicap, the second leg of the T.AJB. double. He ran four places back on the inner to the straight, took a gap, brilliantly dashed past My Friend and The Wanderer, and won with a lot in hand by two lengths. My Friend easily beat The Wanderer for second. My Friend, Mijiji and Skylight ran in line in the lead over the first furlong or so. and The Wanderer trailed closely alongside Persia and just ahead of Renway. Purser, Lucky Sal and Cattiva. My Friend and Skylight led at the three furlongs from Mijiji. The Wanderer, Ren way, Persia and Purser, whose rider, N. Eastwood, had the Neptune gelding galloping easily on the inner. Skylight petered ’out early in the run home, and The Wanderer was closest to My Friend going to the furlong. Purser followed them past the furlong, mastered them in a few powerful strides and won by two lengths and a half with Eastwood sitting quite still on him. ,

My Friend’s second was another sound effort in a careei marked by numerous minor placings. The Wanderer was a length and a half back third, just lasting for that place from Persia. Cattiva and Mijiji were next almost line with Persia. Next were Silver King, Winning Wave. Palace. Kinsimm, Smart, Copperfield, Royal Way, Lucky Sal, Skylight,

Renway, Red Admiral, Cornflake and Gold Token. Easy Win Airephelia did not have to give of her best to win the Champagne Stakes for her North Island owner, Mr T. W. Langford. C. McDonald had this small Beau Repaire filly in a trailing position from the start, Minglow going ahead alone in the lead. Minglow held her lead to. the straight, but Airephelia dashed past her going to the furlong and won easing up by two lengths. Minglow beat the others just as easily. She was two lengths and a half clear of Maybeso, which had to put in a big. run after a slow start Maybeso had only Rayspar behind her after a furlong. She dashed forward to follow Minglow, Airephelia and Just Listen into the straight, and shaded Sunny Morn for third Sunny Morn'was on the Inner alongside Maybeso on the home turn. So was Waterfall, but this Riccarton filly faded to fifth, three lengths back. Kintail Loch was a neck back sixth, and threequarters of a length ahead of the weakening Just Listen. The otlfers, led home by Matlock, were beaten off. Results:— WARRINGTON HURDLES, Of £325. One mile and a half. 4 - B—A. L. H. Barsdell’s blk g HOWDY (3) by Hello Peter —Pay Girl 6yrs 10-8 C.
