SWIMMING AUCKLANDERS WIN 15 TITLES AT DUNEDIN

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, February 16. Three records fell when the national junior and intermediate swimming championships were concluded far the Dunedin municipal pool last night. The War Memorial shield for the centre winning most championships went again to Auckland with 15 titles and Otago with seven filled second place. Third was Canterbury with three championship wins.

Miss Tessa Staveley, of Auckland, in the first event of the evening lowered her own national record for the 100 yards intermediate girls butterfly by 1.1 sec when she won in Imin 9.Bsec. Bruce Robertson, also of Auckland, bettered the time for the 220 yards intermediate boys* backstroke when he clocked 2min 35 sec—l.6sec faster than the previous time and both Miss R. Dunlop (Otago) and Miss N. Chamberlain (Southland) beat the national time for the 220 yards junior girls breaststroke. The Otago girl’s time was 3min 19.5 sec and Miss Chamberlain’s was 3min 19.7 sec—the existing record is 3min 20.2 sec.

Titles went to Auckland in the first four events of the programme, but the northern centre’s run of successes was broken, when the Canterbury swimmers G. Johnson and R. Colquhoun finished first and second respectively in the final of the 100 yards intermediate boys’ breaststroke. Johnson’s time—lmin 15 sec—was Msec outside the New Zealand record of Imin 13.6 sec held jointly by R. Geddes, of Otago, and Johnson.

One of the finest races yet seen at a junior meeting was the 100 yards intermediate boys’ freestyle when six contestants fought their way to the finish with just over a second separating them. As the boys shook hands after the race, the crowd which had cheered itself hoarse during the event burst into spontaneous applause. After a good deal of consultation first place was awarded

to Canterbury’s G. Dann, with a time of 56.75ec. McGuinness of Otago was second in 57sec and J. Fisher (Canterbury) was third with 57.1 sec.

Three Canterbury swimmers, D. Eaton (backstroke), G. Johnson (breaststroke) and G. le Cren (freestyle), were selected for the South Island Stalag Shield relay team. After establishing a lead in the first two lengths the South Island swimmers lost their advantage when the Aucklander, Phillipa Gould, sped over her two backstroke laps and more than made up the distance for her team. The North Islanders, superior in the butterfly section, increased their lead by almost a length, and in spite of distancegaining sprints by the freestylers of the South Island, the victory went to the North in 12min (Msec with the South Island timed at 12min 14.8 sec.
