GLOBEMASTERS’ RETURN
First May Leave U.S. On Saturday The first of the Globemaster aircraft to return to Christchurch for the transport of cargo to the United States bases in Antarctica are expected to leave Donaldson Air Force Base, United States, next Saturday, according to an unofficial report received in Christchurch. No official confirmation has been received by the United States Air Force staff in Christchurch. All the Globemaster aircraft and crews returned to the United States last month when the condition of the ice runway at MeMurdo Sound made it unsuitable for the aircraft to land there. A small force is still stationed at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Weedons, to look after the equipment left at Christchurch airport A Navy spokesman said yesterday that no date had been set for the resumption of Globemaster supply flights to Antarctica.
