LONDON SCOTTISH REGIMENT
12 Veterans To Meet Queen Mother
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 21.
Twelve former members of the London Scottish Regiment who live in New Zealand will attend a private audience with the Queen Mother during Her Majesty’s stay in Auckland at the beginning of next month.
The Queen Mother has been! Colonel of the regiment for more than 20 years. On her recent visit to Rhodesia she met former members on several occasions, and. when the programme for her New Zealand tour was being planned expressed a desire to meet members living in this country When these men held their first dinner in Auckland in 1935, only five attended, but the event was not allowed to lapse and in 1939 the membership grew to 30. The Second World War scattered members far and wide and today the roll contains 16 names. Half of them served during the 1914-18 war and the others in 1939-45 Because of ill-health or distance four will not be able to meet the Queen Mother in Auckland Mr J H C Payne of Auckland has been secretary of the New Zealand association since its inception He took part in five Royal parades while a member of the regiment.
