MATTRESSES IN HOTELS
Complaint By ILS. Tourist “There are. in the North Island ; hotels which have some of the poorest mattresses I have ever! slept on.” said Mr Howard Carpenter, an American tourist in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Carpenter recentlv toured. the North Island. He said that; since he had arrived in New Zealand nearly three months ago J New Zealand hotels had been “asore spot” with him He said that the service at most hotels was good, but bookings for accommodation at the many hotels he had visited was “very" unreliable” he said. Mr Carpenter once worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He retired from a position there some years ago. e He said he had found that manyMaori names in New Zealand were similar to Indian names in the United States. Mr Carpenter said he jvas imJ pressed by the great contrast of! scenery in New Zealand in short distances.
