ARMS HIDDEN UNDER STAIRS
Philadelphia Discovery (Rec. 12.5 a.m.) PHILADELPHIA, January 20. An arsenal of 130 pistols and hundreds of rounds of ammunition was found cached yesterday in the staircase of a North Philadelphia home. Some of the guns were loaded and ready for use. Detectives said they may have been placed there by gangsters during prohibition days. The arsenal included American and German guns of various kinds —some of them palm-sized weapons. The ammunition was in 45 coffee tins. The cache was discovered by Benjamin Halichi, aged 39, a railway worker, in the home of his mother. Halichi found the guns while renovating a staircase in the house. Detective Inspector George Kronbar said six deep sea fishing rods found with the weapons were wrapped in a Philadelphia newspaper dated May 24, 1932. Mr Halichi, who moved into the house with his mother only last Tuesday, said: "There was enough powder in the bullets—between 80 and 1001 b—to. blow the house apart. The bullets were of various calibres and included rounds of "dum-dum’’ (expanding) bullets.
