“EMPIRE WINTER” GAMES
Official Status Is Discussed
(N.Z Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) ST. MORITZ, January 19.
Competitors and officials are wondering whether the Commonwealth winter games, the first of which have ended at St. Moritz, will be taken over officially into the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. When the official Federation meets at Cardiff during the Empire Games in July the point may be discussed. Canada is likely to give support to the suggestion and interest has been shown from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. One of the problems would be the venue. There are not many parts of the Commonwealth where winter sports could be arranged with a certainty that the weather would behave.
Canada is an exception. But it might be asked whether such Commonwealth winter games could not be held outside the Empire.
This year’s games were unofficial but more than 150 competitors took part.
