Camp Out Succeeds In Mungaroa High-Weight

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, January 20. Confidently ridden by K. Nuttall, Camp Out won the Mungaroa High-weight narrowly from the favourite Hard Aport at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham today. This was Camp Out’s first race at the meeting and Nuttall’s first ride.

Hard Aport again tried for an all-the-way win, but he was unable to make his own rules in the lead. Elrey went with him from the start and they set a strong pace which caused the field to string out inside the first halfmile. Camp Out had only Regal Stuart and Contact Victory behind him going to the five furlongs, but he improved steadily three wide coming to the straight and was almost up to Hard Aport going into the last furlong. Nuttall started to ride Camp Out right out, only inside the last 100 yards, and the Awapuni-trained chestnut got up to win by half a neck. Gay Wedge ran on from a trailing position for third, a position he also filled on the first day of the meeting. Regal Stuart made some ground from the turn for fourth, a length and a half behind Gay Wedge. The others were beaten off. Contact Victory, the second favourite, was the first beaten, and finished last Decisive Win for Royal Jester Saturday's Anniversary Handicap proved of value as a guide to the January Handicap. Royal Jester, which was third on Saturday, won decisively, and Turon was runnerup again. Royal Jester, a stocky bay gelding by Timanova from Tendril, was first to break the line from a good start, but W. D. Skelton eased him in behind and Cruising led into the second furlong. Cruising ran to the half-mile just ahead of her bracketed mate. Her Ex. Drum Roll was trailing on the inner, and Royal Jester was alongside him just ahead of Cornflake, Turon, Warwick, Solepic, Sarcelle, Summersette, and Innesfell. Cruising was beaten on the home turn. Her Ex lasted another furlong or so in the lead, but Royal Jester passed her to lead into the last furlong. Turon, which made his run wide on the home turn, tried hard to master the Takanini gelding, but could make no impression. He just lasted for second by a head from Cornflake and Drum Roll, which were separated by a nose. Innesfell ran the last furlong strongly for fifth, a head back, and a length and a half clear of Sarcelle. Warwick, weakening slightly after showing up going to the furlong, was close behind Sarcelle and clear of the weakening Her Ex. Next were Summersette. Cruising, and Solepic. Insignus Beats Promise Insignus and Promise ran together in the lead from the half-mile in the Ruapehu Handicap, and after a hard, sustained battle for mastery Insignus beat the Wingatui three-year-old by a long head. This was Insignus's second win in a rather busy season, but he also had placed form. One placing was

a third in the Otaio Plate at Riccarton in November. Insignus took over the pacemaking from the start. Promise, pulling hard for a time, was able to trail after two furlongs and stayed there alongside Diamond Wedding and Whlohau, just ahead of Broken Wings, Moutere, and Globemaster going along the back straight. Promise and Whiohau were in line with Insignus coming to the straight, and Broken Wings and Globemaster moved up almost in line coming to the last furlong. Broken Wings hung in and faded, and Insignus held to a short lead over the last 100 yards. Masai, which was back with the tail-enders to the half-mile, finished brilliantly for third, a head from Promise. Then there was a length to Cinn Mear, which was last at the half-mile. Broken Wings was a close fifth, and next were Moutere. Master David, Diamond Wedding, and Every Night, and the favourite, Marshall. Pinnace in Form The Riccarton-trained Pinnace completed a good double for Mr W. H. Williamson’s two-year-olds at the meeting by winning the Nursery Handicap most decisively. Pinnace was fourth on Saturday in the Wellington Stakes, won by his stablemate, Blonde Sprite. For the first two furlongs today the Mainbrace—Golden Lagoon colt was nearer last than first on the inner, but he improved steadily when taken wider out and dashed past Selling Fast and Concern inside the last furlong, winning running away by two lengths. Selling Fast, which tried to lead all the way. lasted for second by a nose from Stylish Son, which was fourth into the last furlong and never far from the front earlier. Concern and Prince Nova, both weakening after being well up leaving the chute, were fourth find fifth, and beaten off. Count Cristo was the best of the others, but beaten off. Douro Handicap Parachute, fifth on the home turn, dashed to the front outside the furlong in the Douro Handicap and won soundly by three-quarters of a length from the light-weight Shamrock Queen. Royal Super was third, but three lengths back. Parachute was one of the best beginners and was about four places back at the five furlongs, where Kirklea led from Newsprint. Post. Salt Spray, Gold Peril, Carluke, Parachute, Kilroy, True Cavalier and Genre. Parachute followed Kirklea, Post, Salt Spray, Gold Peril and Carluke into the straight, but was in front a furlong out and it was all over. Shamrock Queen passed seven horses in the last furlong and ran the winner to three parts of a length, but was safely held. Royal Super improved several places for third, but in a gap ahead of Carluke and Kaseno. Kaseno was one of the last away, and put in a long run. Defiant. Kirklea, Geta and Bon Salut were the best of the others. Post was thirteenth to finish. Negotiations For Second Earl (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 20. Negotiations are being made for the sale of Second Earl. If a sale is made the champion two-year-old will do his future racing in the United State*.
