Motor-Cycling NATIONAL T.T. RACES
P. Murphy Wins Both Events (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 19. Riding brilliantly at lap record pace, the international motor-cyclist, Peter Murphy, of Auckland, raced into first place in both the senior and junior New Zealand tourist trophy motor-cycle road races at Mangere yesterday. He broke the lap records in both events and set new times for the two races.
From first place on the starting grid, Murphy, riding a Matchless G-45, led the field of 34 from start to finish in the senior race. He was followed by W. Collett (Auckland). P. Pawson (Hamilton), and J. Hempieman (Auckland), all riding Nortons, while in the fifth place was F. Cardon (Auckland) on a Matchless G-45. In the third lap, Cardon was forced out with engine trouble and his place was taken by N. Boag (Hastings) on a Norton. These positions remained unchanged until the close of the race.
Murphy lapped all but four contestants. Soon after the start, he set a new lap record of 4min 14sec —an average speed of 85.1 miles an hour—and his time for the course was 2min 35sec faster than his own record for the race last year.
Murphy steadily increased his lead over Collett, who in turn forged away from Pawson in third place. Their finishing times were: Murphy, 73min 13sec for 17 laps of the sixmile track: Collett, 73min 53sec, and Pawson 76min 6sec.
In the Junior TT for motor-cycles of up to 350 cc, J. Hempieman on a Norton, led from the grid almost to Ascot road straight where he was caught by Murphy who then led to the finish. Murphy clipped 33 seconds off Rod Coleman’s record time set last year. His average speed of 82 miles an hour in the second lap was a new record. He finished two minutes ahead of the second man in 76min 29sec. Results:—
