American Progress In Missiles
fN.Z. Press Association—Copyright \ (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 19. The United States was about on a par with Russia in ballistic missile progress and, generally, was ahead of the Soviets in guided missiles, the Deputy Secretary of Defence (Mr Donald Quarles) said today. Ballistic missiles are longrange weapons which are aimed, like an artillery shell, and follow a predictable trajectory. Guided missiles are directed in flight by delicate controls.
The appraisal of missile progress by the No. 2 Defence Department official, in a filmed television interview, gave a more encouraging picture of United States strength than has come out of some recent testimony before Congressional committees.
