RACING CLUB HANDICAP AT TRENTHAM

Liban Wins In Race Record Time

(From Out Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, January 20.

Liban, the tenth favourite of 18, proved the value of his solid holiday form in the south when he decisively won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham today.

Mr S. G. Farry’s four-year-old had his first race at the meeting. He ran out a mile and a half brilliantly and his time of 2min 28jsec equalled the race record. ' ,

Liban badl, chafed his side on the steamer express when he was brout’it north by his Gore trainer, E. A. Winsloe, last week, but that expedience did not affect him today. The leading jockgy, W. D. Skelton, rode him in a trailing position to the straight and into the lead past Honest John going to the furlong. Teaka, which is trained at Hiccarton, tried hard to reach him, but was safely held. Liban has now won three races this season. His first was the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Christinas Handicap on December 21. Then at his next start he won the Wyndham Cup, after which he ran third in the Invercargill Gold Cup. In those races, he was ridden by H. J. Skelton, who was on Teaka today. Happy Warrior, which finished in the middle of the field in the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday, won the Metropolitan Handicap, second leg of the double, in a spectacular finish with Japonica and the Riccarton light-weight Dhofar. Happy Warrior and Japonica were both slow beginners, but finished brilliantly. Dhofar tried for an all-the-way win and it was late when she lost the lead. Happy Warrior is a powerful brown gelding, by Gilpin from Lucky Dip, owned by Mr C. T. Keeble, who has had a successful run with horses trained at Woodville by E. Ropiha. He was ridden by W. J. Broughton. Holders of 1133 tickets <ss unit) on the Liban-Happy Warrior combination received £263 3s for £l. Three-Tear-Olds The Gloaming Stakes, for three-year-olds over the Derby distance, was won narrowly by Daysun, a half-brother, by the English Derby winner Mid-day Sun from Cairness, to the brilliant Gold Script. Daysun had won two highweights at Ellerslie at the Auckland Cup meeting, but they did not put him in high favour for a race such as the Gloaming Stakes. But it was hardly a race for the first six furlongs. The early pace was slack and in the sprint home Daysun lasted to beat Rover by half a head. The warm favourite Gibraltar was third. He made his challenge on the inner and had to be eased near the end when unable to find racing room. There was a long inquiry into the incident. A film of the finish was shown, but no action was taken. The track was fast, the weather fine but windy, and the attendance was 15,000. The on-course totalizator turnover was £207.135 10s, including £20.220 on the double, compared with £180,836 10s for the second day last year, an increase of’ £17.299. Comfortable Win for Liban Laban challenged from a trailing position outside the furlong in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap and won comfortably by a length from the win favourite. Teaka. which was dose behind him on the home turn. The consistent Great Scot was half a length back third. W. D. Skelton had Liban well placed behind the pacemakers. Honest John and Intuitive, from the start, and R. J. Skelton on Teaka was never far behind ' the Gore Honest John went dear by a length at the six furlongs, and led past the half-mile from Intuitive. Liban. Teaka, Brookside. Bali Ha’i, Great Scot. Yeman, Flair. Gay Lodge. Mananui. and Toparoa. Honest John held his lead round the home turn, but Liban mastered him after a short struggle and went into the last furlong keeping up a strong gallop. Teaka gave determined chase going to the furlong, but reached the end of his run soon after, although he was in no danger of losing second to Great Great Scot beat Brookside by a length for third. Then there was another length to Toparoa. The Wellington Cup winner. Yeman. was sixth after showing up in fifth place on the home turn. Next were Gay Lodge. Honest John. Bali Ha’i. Mananui, Flair. Sea Hornet, Finite. Intuitive. Clinker. Three Step. Gundar Haegg. and Gleaming Stakes to Daysun Daysun. winner of two highweights in as many starts at the Auckland Cup meeting. gamely fought off a determined challenge from Rover to win the Gloaming Stakes. There was only half a head between them, and a gap of two lengths and a half to the favourite. Gibraltar, which had to be eased when squeezed for room on the inner near the end. Stylish Officer and Daysun pulled to the front in the first furlong or so and set a crawl pace. It did not look like a race till Stylish Officer went ahead in the lead six furlongs and a half out. He led past the halfmile by three lengths from Daysun and Imitation. Gibraltar was following Imitation on the inner, but could make no headway there, and was tailing the field when others made ground on the outer coming to the turn. Stylish Officer was beaten after straightening up. and Daysun led to the furlong from Rover. Gibraltar had found a gap on the inner and was then third. Rover challenged determinedly. but Daysun never faltered in a battling finish and got there narrowly. Gibraltar, which could not find racing room near the end, beat Imitation by three-quarters of a length for third Then there was half a length to Savage, three lengths to Stylish Officer, a small gap to Mexico, and 12 lengths to Sigur at the rear. Spectacular Finish Happy Warrior, the slowest beginner. narrowly won the Metropolitan Handicap in a spectacular finish with Japonica and Dhofar. Only a no** and a neck separated them. Dhofar lumped out deer and led over the first furlong from BaroDhofar led from the half-mile to the straight, but Moon Crest had put in a big run from the tail of the field, and was almost in line with her. Zekan. Barobar, .Monogram, ■nd Lachlan were not far behind, •nd Happy Warrior was mounting a powerful run wider out.

Moon. Crest faded out of the picture near the furlong, leaving Dhofar clear, but Happy Warrior and Japonica swooped on her close to the post. Japonica had a shade the stronger finish, but could not nose Happy Warrior away from victory. Monogram was a good fourth, and the weakening Barobar, which had a good run on the inner, fifth. Next were Lorica, Baraden, Rawera (in a gap), Regal Dignitary, Zekan. Domitare. Lachlan, and Moon Crest. Results:— MUNGAROA HIGH-WEIGHT, Of £750. One mile and three furlongs. & 5—T. V.
