John Konrads last night set his sixth world swimming record when he won the final of the 220 yards freestyle event in 2min 4.Bsec at the North Sydney Olympic Pool. Passing the 200-jnetre mark Konrads was .4sec better than the standard set for the world record. . Konrads’ 220 yd time was Isec better than the previous world record time held by Gary Chapman. Chapman and Konrads swam a thrilling race in the event last night, with 15-year-old Konrads touching a foot ahead of the former world record holder. Graham Hamilton was third. Chapman’s time of 2min s.2sec also broke the previous world record. With the crowd roaring Chapman touched first at the 165 ya mark on Imin 32.55ec, about a yard ahead of Konrads. The pair then staged their magnificent last-lap duel. The times recorded by the first five place-getters were easily the fastest in Australia.

Hamilton finished third in 2min 7.4 sec, closely followed by John O’Halloran (2min B.lsec) and Brian Wilkinson (2min B.ssec.)
