•The Minister of Works (Mr H. Watt) will now visit Christchurch next Wednesday to discuss the Waimakariri river flooding with the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s officials.
Mr T. R. Smith, a former New Zealand public servant, was sworn in as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission for the next five years at a short ceremony in the office of the Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs .(Mr Nash) yesterday. Until recently, Mr Smith was Secretary to the Government of Western Samoa.—(P.A.)
Mr G. E. F. Wood, who has been Government Statistician since 1946, will retire from that position at the end of this month. He will continue in his recent appointment as chairman of the Public Service Special Appeal Board. A successor to Mr Wood as Government Statistician has not yet been appointed.—(P.A.).
